The most common method is the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) method, used by all major arrow manufacturers of carbon and aluminium shafts.

This method involves fixing an arrow shaft at two points, 28 inches apart. Directly in between the two supports a weight of 880 grams is hung. Naturally, the arrow will bend (deflect), and it is the size of the deflection that determines the spine number. The deflection is measured in thousandths of an inch, so if the arrow deflects half an inch, that’s 0.5”, then the spine number is 500.

Equally, if the deflection is measured at 0.35” then the spine number is 350. When you release the string it accelerates. Suppose that the string accelerates to full speed instantaneously. Then the nock must also go through the same acceleration. If the arrow was perfectly stiff, that is had a spine rating of 0, then the point would also go through the same acceleration. Of course, our arrows are not perfectly stiff. Instead, the shaft of the arrow absorbs some of that force applied upon release. So, the force must travel down the shaft of the arrow, called an impulse. That delay in the force reaching the point of the arrow means that, just for a brief moment, the nock is moving at full speed while the point of the arrow is still stationary. The distance between nock and point is therefore less than the length of the arrow so the arrow shaft must bend.

Some maths for those that way inclined! The impulse is measured by the force applied multiplied by the time it takes to implement the force. So, if an arrow is perfectly stiff the arrow cannot bend and the time it takes for the impulse to travel is reduced to 0, so the impulse is 0 and that corresponds to there being no bend. If the arrow was very weak the arrow will bend a lot, it then takes a lot longer for the force to travel from one end of the arrow to the other, creating a larger impulse, corresponding to the larger bend. So, in fact, anything that affects the impulse is affecting the amount the arrow bends, and a lot more factors affect the impulse than simply the stiffness of the arrow shaft. In fact, I’ve completely ignored the fact that the nock will also morph and absorb some force in the process but that’s fine because it’s such a small factor.

Most modern arrow charts account for this – most accurately by considering the “hardness” of the cam. A soft cam is one that is smooth to draw and applies a consistent force, whereas a hard cam pushes the arrow more later in its rotation, applying the maximum acceleration later in the window. You’ll see spine charts suggest stiffer arrows for harder cams in line with this effect. A hard cam is usually considered as one that shoots arrows at 300fps (IBO) or greater, which covers most modern cams.

We can already see that the speed at which the bow shoots an arrow, as well as how smoothly it accelerates the arrow, affects how stiff we need our arrow spine to be.

          Where does it bend?

We start off by answering this question separately for different release types.
Those shooting their bow from their fingers cause the string to move around their fingers, creating a horizontal force. Instead, a vertical force needs to be introduced. This is so that the arrow, particularly the vanes, have good clearance above the arrow rest. To ensure this some compound bows are set up so that the nock travel is not perfectly straight, rather it moves the nock upward slightly, others require their nocking points be positioned marginally above centre. Either way this introduces a very slight vertical force and so the arrow is encouraged to bend vertically. Simply put, the arrow will bend in the direction it finds the easiest, so consistently placing a small force upward or sideways ensures the bend occurs in the direction it is needed.

Figure 3: The direction of force that makes the arrow bend horizontally for finger releases and vertically for release aids

Now, what about where along the arrow the bend occurs? When you simply have a shaft with no components on it and you just hang a weight from the centre the arrow will of course bend where the weight is, in mathematics we would say we are modelling the arrow as a light uniform rod. But we aren’t in this perfect world where chickens are all spherical. Instead, the force is being applied not at the centre of the shaft but at a slight angle at one end of the shaft. Moreover, the arrow is not uniform because its centre of mass is not in the centre, it is closer to the point of the arrow because the components all add weight. How does this affect the arrow bend?
To get to the answer we first need to understand the oscillation of the arrow. Of course, as the arrow flies the arrow as a whole is moving toward a point on the target. However, most of the points on the arrow, certainly early in the arrow flight, are not travelling directly there. They are wobbling up and down or left and right. The reason the arrow continues towards this one point is that for every point of the arrow applying a force in one direction there is another point of the arrow applying the equal force in the other direction.
Even amongst all this wobbling there are two points on the arrow, called nodes, that don’t wobble, they travel exactly along the flight path of the arrow. Consider a rope, if you’ve not done it yourself you’ve probably seen the popular exercise that involves moving a rope up and down to force it to make waves. Those waves are oscillations. The vertical force you’re applying at one end of the rope is similar to the force your bow applies to the nock. As you settle into a rhythm different parts of the rope move up and down, some parts of the rope move more than others, and there are at least two points along the rope that don’t move at all.

The same thing happens with your arrow. The nock is moved slightly off the flight path causing an oscillation. No further force is applied once the nock leaves the string, so the oscillation is fixed. That means, like in any oscillating system, there must be some nodes, some points that don’t wobble. The amplitude of the oscillation is how much the arrow bends at it’s most. That spot of maximum bend will be halfway between the nodes; however, the nodes will not be evenly spaced from each end of the arrow. Because the arrow carries more weight at the front because of the arrow point, the nodes will be closer to the front of the arrow, and so the position at which the arrow is bending the most is nearer the front as well.

Figure 4: Oscillation of an arrow showing the nodes

Practical; You can very easily find where the nodes on your arrow are. Around about an inch to two inches from the point of your arrow grasp the shaft between two fingers. Make sure your other fingers are well out of the way so they will not touch any part of the arrow. Now firmly hit the arrow against your leg near the vanes. You will feel the arrow vibrate, and it’s showing you the natural oscillation of your arrow. Now move your fingers along your arrow shaft a small amount and repeat. If the arrow vibrates for longer you have moved closer to your node, if it stops vibrating sooner then you have moved away from your node. If it doesn’t vibrate at all you are a long way from your node. You can keep adjusting until you find the spot that the arrow vibrates for the longest, normally a fair few seconds, and that is one of the nodes of your arrow. Whereas when you pinch it exactly where the node is you are pinching the arrow in a place that doesn’t want to move anyway, so you’re allowing all the parts of the arrow that want to wobble to do so. It is also changed by the length of the arrow. Even in the controlled conditions used to test the arrow bend, if the test were done by pinching the arrow at 30” rather than 28” you would get more deflection, similarly you get less deflection if you pinch it closer together. In our arrow flight the same thing is happening with respect to the nodes of the oscillation rather than a place you pinch the arrow.
If the nodes are far apart the arrow will be able to bend more, signifying a weaker arrow. If the nodes are closer together the arrow will bend less, signifying a stiffer arrow. So, a stiffer arrow spine will always have nodes that are closer together than a weaker arrow spine, but the stiffness of the spine isn’t the only thing that affects how far apart the nodes are.
By making the arrow longer we move the nodes further apart, so an archer with a longer draw length will have arrows that bend more and so will need to use a stiffer spine arrow than an archer with a shorter draw length, and vice versa. We can also use a heavier point in an arrow as this moves the node nearest the point closer to the end of the arrow, that means the nodes move further apart and the arrow can bend more. So, a heavier point effectively weakens the arrow, while a lighter point will stiffen the arrow.

Example: An indoor arrow is often very stiff due to its width. There are a lot of factors you can control when choosing your arrow set up, but these two factors are the things you’re want to achieve. A stiffer arrow will group better as the arrow flight is straighter, thus generally more consistently, all the way until the arrow reaches the point of too stiff to avoid contact, when the grouping rapidly declines. However, forgiveness is much more difficult to attain. It depends on the location of the nodes in respect to the arrow rest, but also where the arrow rest can be placed in relation to the throat of the grip. It also generally needs a heavier point up to a threshold of easily reaching the distance. Moreover, a slower arrow is more forgiving but won’t group as well at distance due to atmospheric conditions, not just wind, so fletching offset or helically can help or hinder.

Figure 6: The difference between grouping and forgiveness

Practice Makes Permanent

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/practice-makes-permanent

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/practice-makes-permanent#comments

Mentality

Technique

Tips

You don’t get better without practicing. In fact, if you don’t practice enough you’re likely to get gradually worse as your brain cannot build and utilise its muscle memory. However, you have to practice quality.

Whatever you do in practice is what your body learns to do, and the more you practice that process the more permanent that process becomes as it builds itself into your muscle memory. “Practice makes perfect” is a misnomer. Consistency is important and if you are doing something badly, consistently, that’s still better than doing something well occasionally. When you practice you make your technique more permanent, and that’s good, but practicing quality is better. If you practice quality shots, with technique that is conducive to consistent arrow flight, then you make your shot consistently high quality. So it’s important to practice, but it’s even more important to practice quality.

Training can be tedious. Sometimes you have some part of your technique to work on, when you do that's all that should occupy your mind. Forget about everything else, even aiming to start with, and focus solely on getting this one new part of your technique into your muscle memory. That takes anything from 1000 to 10,000 shots so it’s important to keep focussed, and don’t overcomplicate by trying to change more than one thing at once. As that element becomes more natural you start to incorporate it into your usual process where aiming becomes more important, so that’s when to start thinking about executing a complete shot.

There will be times, especially in the middle of a heavy competition season, where you aren’t working on anything in particular. This is when it is hardest to keep motivated in training and showing up to training to just go through the motions isn’t using training effectively. To really make the small steps needed to get to the top you have to find ways of using this time to its fullest. The biggest issue for most archers is that their competition scores are worse than those in training. This is always likely but making that gap smaller is vital.

Emulating competition conditions is very difficult but using different techniques in training can help do this. You can try scoring your rounds and hold yourself to some account for that score by promising to share it with people, or by competing against someone else. You can be more inventive though. You can try setting yourself a target of a number of tens and trying to shoot this many tens in as few arrows as possible. An experienced compound archer might aim for 50 tens, an experiences recurve might aim for 30. Don’t let yourself finish a session until you’ve shot at least a certain number of tens, say. Or give yourself a number of points to drop, perhaps as many as you might expect to drop on a 720, and shoot as many arrows as you can before you drop more than that. You can choose a previous competition on Ianseo and compete in that tournament, shoot a ranking round and find where it would rank you, then take that persons place in the knockouts and try to win each match.

Practicing matches is the most important part of competition practice because that’s what gets you your wins. You can use a random number generator (Google has one if you just search for it). Shoot your three arrows, then generate three numbers, if the number is 1 or 2, say, then your opponent scores 9, any higher then they score 10. You can change that threshold to alter the difficulty.

Google's Random Number Generator

This will give you the sense of having to compete against another archer, not knowing what they are going to shoot and getting used to both being ahead and having to catch up.

Finally, don’t train too much. If you train so much that your shot starts to suffer, your technique isn’t as good and your muscles are fatiguing too quickly, then stop training. Whether that be just for that session, you need to take a break or stop training and pick it up again tomorrow, or whether that be a fatiguing over many sessions. You may find that you are fatiguing after 200 arrows, where before you could shoot 250. That means your muscles aren’t getting the time to recover, so give yourself a day or two off to fully rejuvenate before you train again. You won’t get quality training used to its fullest potential if you are shooting tired shots.

In short, make sure you use your training time as well as you can. Quality is important. Find a way to keep yourself motivated and concentrated on every shot. Concentration is a skill and being able to concentrate for 72 arrows in a row is important but barely achievable. It becomes much more achievable, though, if you are used to it in practice.

Effort or Effortless?

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/effort-or-effortless

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/effort-or-effortless#comments

Technique

There is certainly merit to be given to the idea that effort reaps reward and laziness gets you nowhere. This article covers the effort required to shoot an arrow. In short, too much effort makes the shot tiring, you’ll fatigue earlier and struggle to maintain consistency, too little effort makes the shot weak so the bow will react differently to each shot.

Some muscles are required for your shot and others aren’t, and this exact list will vary dependent on your own technique, but it’s important to know when your skeleton is taking the workload, and when your muscles come into action. All the muscles you decide shouldn’t be playing a role you want to have doing nothing, working at 0% capacity. The important factor is consistency, and it is much easier to consistently have your muscles do nothing, than work at 5%. A side tip; your smaller muscles used for fine motor control, such as fingers and wrists, are best left relaxed in most circumstances, as these are harder to get consistent and can make the biggest difference to the shot.

The muscles you determine should be active, such as your rhomboids and core muscles, should work at high capacity, determined by their endurance level. The higher the capacity they work at the more consistent you are likely to find your shot, the nearer the end of the scale, 0% or 100%, the easier this is. Yet, you can’t have your muscles work at 100% capacity as this is unsustainable. Archery is an endurance sport, and you must be able to complete an entire tournament with the same shot process throughout. Your capacity should be determined by your own endurance through experience, so try different amounts of effort in practice over an entire day. If this amount of effort is quite low, and you find it difficult to make it consistent then it is important to work on your endurance, either through volume of arrows or by getting to the gym.

It’s very important to find where the effort should be put in. Your skeleton is far better at consistency than your muscles, so put as much load on it as you can, sensibly, though, to avoid long term problems. Effort should be applied only to manage stability and your execution; your positioning should be supported as much as possible through your skeleton. The smaller muscles should be relaxed wherever possible, especially your bow hand and wrist. Your release wrist should be entirely relaxed to allow for the alignment to be accurate and the release to be executed more smoothly. The release hand fingers must be tense, at least until release, and so should be exactly as tense as necessary.

You can alter which muscles are active and which aren’t in practice to find what works best for you, or get a coach to suggest where some extra effort, or some less effort, might be useful.

Execution is Key

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/execution-is-key

https://www.infocusarchery.com/advice/execution-is-key#comments

Mentality

Technique

How well you execute your shot is key to consistent grouping. There are two points of contact between you and your equipment, one of these is your release hand with either your string or your release aid. Your execution then, is vital, as it has a significant effect on how well your arrow flies from your bow.

What do I mean by good execution? The answer can be different for each individual but whatever you do when you execute your shot there are some key factors you’ll need. Your execution should have as little effect on the string as possible, if you put any lateral force on the string in your release your arrow will carry that force into its path to the target. Your release hand should come directly backward from the arrow path.

How do you build your execution? First, consider the main requirement of your execution. Every force has an equal and opposite reaction. If your release motion moves away from your face this introduces a horizontal force which must be matched by the string and arrow flight. If you want your arrow to fly with maximum efficiency, which you do, then your release hand should move in the exact opposite direction to the arrow.

How do you achieve this motion? The muscles you use are very important. The muscles in your fingers, hand and wrist are best for fine motor skills, but that means tiny changes in how you activate your muscles make significant changes to how well they work. Your arm, too, is less consistent than your back. You should use your rhomboid. This muscle pulls your scapula (or shoulder blade) toward your spine. In turn this brings your shoulder back, moving your elbow as well. That rotation is what you should use to execute your shot. Be it by introducing rotation into the release aid to have it go off or expanding your draw to pull your arrow through your clicker. At the point your shot executes you want to have your elbow lying directly on the path of your arrow. That way, at the point of execution the force pulls your release hand directly away from the arrow so as to ensure no lateral force is introduced to its flight.

To ensure no vertical force is placed on the arrow you must put tension in your rhomboid at the right height. If you use your lower rhomboid too much you will create a downward force through your release motion as well as introducing an upward force on your front shoulder that will cause your arrow to go high. Similarly, if you have too much bias to your upper rhomboid your arrow will tend to fly low.

Balancing this pull on your release rhomboid against your bow-side rhomboid is what gives you stability in your aiming. We will cover this in a different article, but the important part here is that you wish to find this balance at the moment of execution. By doing so you ensure your bow is at its steadiest as the shot releases, again reducing any unhelpful lateral forces on the arrow as the bow itself isn't moving. This is also helpful in the final key factor of a well-executed shot.

Confidence. Your execution will not be consistent if it is not done with confidence. If you play it safe when you shoot by aiming too carefully then your shot will take too long, you will fatigue, become unbalanced and your execution will not have the same accurate direction it needs, while your bow is moving more than it would normally. While you can’t just ignore aiming and execute regardless of where your sight is pointing you should still execute with confidence. A more confident shot will be far more forgiving than a hesitant one, because hesitancy introduces tension in muscles that are supposed to be relaxed, putting more forces into the arrow flight. The chances are, you may think you aren’t aiming centrally but executing confidently will still have your arrow fly closer to the middle than you thought.

There are two key take-aways: Alignment and balanced back tension to get the shot to go off so that your hand moves directly away from the path of the arrow, and, more than anything, trust your shot and execute with confidence.
